ExpressVPN announced the launch of its completely redesigned mobile applications for iOS and Android devices on Tuesday, introducing several new features aimed at improving user experience and performance. The privacy and security company, based in the British Virgin Islands, has been rolling out these updates to existing users with full availability scheduled for May 30.
The redesigned applications represent a significant overhaul of ExpressVPN’s mobile platform, focusing on enhanced usability and streamlined functionality. According to the company, mobile devices serve as the primary connection method for many of their users, making app optimization a key priority.
New Speed Testing and Performance Features
One of the most notable additions is the integrated speed test tool, which allows users to check their connection speed directly within the app. This feature enables users to evaluate server performance in real-time and identify the fastest available connections for their specific needs, whether for streaming, gaming, or general browsing.
The company has also upgraded its Smart Location algorithm, which now provides intelligent recommendations for the top three to five VPN locations based on multiple factors including speed, latency, and geographical distance. These recommended servers appear at the top of the VPN locations list, making it easier for users to connect to optimal servers with a single tap.
Enhanced iOS Functionality
A significant development for iOS users is the addition of OpenVPN protocol support. This feature addresses one of the most frequently requested additions from the iOS user base, according to ExpressVPN. The OpenVPN support gives iPhone and iPad users additional protocol options, allowing them to customize their connection based on specific requirements for compatibility or speed.
Shay Peretz, Chief Information Officer at ExpressVPN, emphasized the importance of mobile optimization.
“Mobile is the primary way many of our users stay connected and protected, so it’s essential that the app experience be intuitive, fast, and feature-rich,” – Peretz stated in the company announcement.
Design and Interface Improvements

The redesigned applications feature upgraded visuals and a simplified interface that prioritizes ease of use. Key improvements include a clearer Profile screen, which replaces the previous Options menu, along with streamlined Help content and faster access to settings.
Users can now view their current server selection through a new interactive map view, providing a more visual and engaging way to understand their connection within ExpressVPN’s global network infrastructure.
Future Development Plans
Peretz indicated that these updates represent the beginning of planned improvements to the ExpressVPN platform.
“We’ve redesigned the mobile app experience from the ground up to meet the expectations of today’s privacy-conscious, always-connected users,” he said. “It’s only the beginning of what we have planned.”
The updated applications are available for download through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. ExpressVPN has been operating since 2009 and became part of Kape Technologies in 2021. The company’s services have undergone third-party security audits by firms including PwC, Cure53, and KPMG.
The rollout of these redesigned mobile applications demonstrates ExpressVPN’s continued focus on mobile user experience as smartphone and tablet usage continues to dominate internet access patterns globally.
