DreamHost, a U.S.-based web hosting and cloud services provider, has officially opened its first international data center in Amsterdam, Netherlands, the company announced on June 18, 2024. The new facility expands the company’s infrastructure into the European Union, aiming to serve a growing global customer base while addressing demand for regional data storage and improved load speeds.
The Amsterdam data center supports managed WordPress hosting, Virtual Private Servers (VPS), Dedicated Hosting, and DreamCompute – the company’s OpenStack-based cloud computing platform.
Customers now have the option to select this European location at sign-up, enabling faster access for users located outside the United States.
Environmental and Regulatory Focus
DreamHost stated the new facility is powered entirely by renewable energy, aligning with European sustainability goals. The expansion also supports General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance, helping businesses meet data residency requirements within the EU. This is particularly relevant for customers concerned with how and where their digital assets are stored.
“With the launch of our Amsterdam data center, we’re bringing our services closer to our international customers,” said the company via its official press release.
Technical Features and Availability
DreamHost’s Amsterdam center is compatible with its existing suite of services, meaning users do not need to make changes to configurations or hosting plans. The company has also ensured the new location integrates fully with its control panel and API.
Additionally, DreamHost maintains data replication, network redundancy, and hardware monitoring across its infrastructure, including the new EU-based facility.
Users interested in selecting the Amsterdam data center during sign-up can do so through the official DreamHost website, where region selection is available at checkout.
Strategic Expansion
The decision to open in Amsterdam reflects growing international demand for hosting solutions that meet both performance expectations and legal requirements for data storage. With a strong internet backbone, Amsterdam serves as a major network hub in Europe, offering low-latency connections to nearby regions.
According to DreamHost, this is part of a long-term plan to support its global user base by providing scalable, secure, and locally compliant hosting environments.
More details on technical specifications and available services can be found on the DreamHost EU hosting plans page.
DreamHost’s announcement follows similar moves by other cloud providers seeking to broaden their international reach. The company did not disclose the size or cost of the Amsterdam facility.
